General Questions

-
What should I bring to my first class

You’ll need indoor shoes and a water bottle for every class.
For anything other than Boxing Basics, you’ll also need hand wraps, gloves, and a mouthguard.
Don’t worry if you don’t have gear yet — we sell gloves, wraps, and mouth-guards at the gym to get you started. If you'd like to see the options we have, click here.

-
I’ve never boxed before — is that okay?

Only one way to learn, to start. We all start somewhere.

-
Is boxing safe for beginners?
Yes — we take safety seriously at every level. Beginners start by learning fundamentals and defence first, so you’ll never be put into drills you’re not ready for. When you do start partner work, the right gear is mandatory: a mouthpiece for all partner drills, 16 oz gloves for safety, and headgear when you’re ready to learn sparring (which only happens when our head coach deems you ready). Your progression is always at a pace that keeps you confident and protected.

-
What’s the difference between your classes?

Level 1: For absolute beginners — you’ll learn the fundamentals from scratch in a safe, supportive environment.
Level 1.5: Open to all levels. Great for beginners who already know the basics and want to build skills. (If you jump in too soon, you may be asked to return to Level 1 to make sure you’re ready.)
Level 2: For intermediate boxers who have a solid grasp of technique and want to refine their skills with more complex drills and sparring prep.
Level 3: For competitors only. These sessions are focused, high-intensity, and designed for those actively training to fight.

For FUNBOX we work within the 5-9 age range, YOUTHBOX is for ages 10-14.
The rest of the classes are good for 15 and up. Regardless of age, we all start with the basics so if you have no experience with boxing specifically, you will start in Boxing Basics.
-
What is your sliding scale membership?
A sliding scale membership means you pay what you can within a set range. We’re a community gym, and we want to make boxing as accessible as possible—this helps support those with different financial situations while keeping our doors open to everyone.
We offer three tiers:
-
Community Tier – a reduced rate for those who need a bit of financial support
-
Standard Tier – our regular membership rate
-
Supporter Tier – a higher rate for those who are able to contribute more and help subsidize others in our community
No matter the tier, all memberships offer the same access and experience.

You can sign up in the app or online at www.teneightboxing.com/book-your-class .

Totally up to you. If it’s the first class of the day the doors are usually open around 5-10 minutes beforehand at the latest. This should give you enough time to get wrapped up and ready for warmup.

Training & Progress

-
How long until I can spar or compete?

It all depends on the work you put in, and when coach feels that you are ready. A good estimate would be to expect it to take a year before you are ready to compete.
Do you offer personal training?
Yes, we offer one-on-one appointments which you can purchase in either a single or a package deal. This is a great way to get more personalized training with our coaches. Once you purchase your package we can get you in touch with one of the coaches based on what your availability is and what you are looking for. Click here to go to the one-on-one page.

-
What’s the best class to start with?
The best class to start with is Boxing Basics. It gives you the foundations you need so that you can feel confident and comfortable taking the next step into partner drills.

-
Can I just train for fitness and not compete?

You don’t have to compete — many people train just for fitness and to stay sharp. But you will train with the same focus and intensity as someone preparing for a fight. This way, you’ll be ready to support your training partners, some of whom may be working toward competition.
